The third instalment of our Fairy Tale inspired CAL - Happily Ever After is here! This week's granny square is the second medium motif! This idyllic square is worked in rounds of treble and double crochet stitches. Each round is worked in a different colour. Choose between 2-4 colour yarns for this square and get creative!

Stylecraft Special DK (100% Acrylic) in 100g (295m) balls, entire blanket requires the following:
2 balls in each of Cream (Cream 1005), Green (Meadow 1065) and Fawn (Parchment 1218), 1 ball in each of Deep Pink (Raspberry 1023) and Pale Pink (Clematis 1390). 1 ball in each of Pale Blue (Cloud Blue 1019), Dark Grey (Graphite 1063) and Dusky Pink (Vintage Pink 1836), 1 ball in each of Mid Blue (Aster 1003), Pale Yellow (Lemon 1020), Dark Green (Teal 1062), Purple (Violet 1277), Orange (Spice 1711), Pale Grey (Silver 1203), Light Teal (Denim 1302) and Rust (Copper 1029). 3 balls White (White 1001).  You will also need a size 3mm crochet hook.

First round: With 3mm hook, make a slip stitch (sl st) in your chosen colour, in this case it's Parchment (D).

Pull loop tight on hook.

Make 6 chains (6ch), to do this, take yarn over hook.

Pull through loop on hook.

You will have one loop on hook.

Repeat a further five times, making 6 chains (6ch) in total.

Work 3tr into the 6th chain from hook. To do this, take yarn over hook.

Insert hook into the 6th chain (ch) from hook.

Take yarn over hook and pull through making 3 stitches (sts) on hook.

Take yarn over hook again and pull through 2 sts.

Take yarn over hook and pull through remaining 2 sts.

Repeat once more. Then work 2ch.

Repeat the 2tr, 3ch twice more in the same place.

Then work two more tr in same place.

Join with a slip stitch (sl st) in 3rd of the 5ch.

To join with a sl st, insert hook into st, take yarn over.

Pull through all sts on hook.

Second round: Attach Meadow (C) yarn to any 2 ch sp and make 7ch.

Work 2tr in same 2 ch sp.

Work 1tr in each of the next 3 tr and 2tr, 4ch and 2tr in each 2 corner space.

Continue to work the round referring to the pattern. Working 1tr in each tr and the 2tr, 4ch, 2tr in each corner space.

End with 1tr in the base of 7ch and then sl st into the 3rd of the 7ch.

Third round: Attach Copper (Q), yarn to any 4 ch sp and 1ch.

Work 5 double crochet stitches (dc) in the 4 chsp. To work a dc, insert hook into st.

Take yarn over hook and pull through st.

Take yarn over hook again and pull through 2 sts on hook.

Repeat a further four times.

Work 1dc in each of the next 3tr.

Next, insert hook into next tr.

Take yarn over hook and pull through.

Insert hook into the st in round directly below the tr.

Take yarn over hook and pull through.

Take yarn over hook and pull through all three loops on hook. This is called the spike stitch.

Work 1dc in each of the next 3tr.

Repeat round referring to pattern.

Work sl st in first dc.

Fourth round: With (D), work 3ch.

Work 1tr in next dc.

Work 4ch and the miss the next dc, work 1tr in each of next 11 sts.

Repeat round referring to the pattern.

Fifth round: With (C), work 3ch.

Work 1tr in next tr.

Work 2tr, 4ch and 2tr in the corner space.

Then work 1tr in each of the next 11 sts.

Continue referring to the pattern, working 1tr in the last 9 sts.

Sixth round: Attach (Q) in same place as sl st from previous round and 1ch.

Work a dc in the same stitch and 1dc in each of the next 3tr.

Work 5dc in the corner space.

Then 1dc in each of the next 4tr.

Work a spike stitch in the next tr. See before for how to make a spike stitch.

Work 1dc in each of the next 5tr sts. Work another spike stitch in the next tr then 1dc in each of the next 4 sts.

Work 5dc in the corner spaces.

Repeat round referring to pattern.

Seventh round: Attach (D) and 3ch.

Work 1tr in each of next 5dc.

Work 4ch, miss the next dc and work 1tr into the next 19 sts.

Repeat referring to the pattern. Join at end with a sl st in first dc.

Eighth round:  With (C), 3ch.

Weave in all of the ends, and that's your third instalment complete! Make another 15 squares, get creative and vary the colours of stripes. Use between 2-4 colours for each square.
