Charity of the Month - The Big Issue Foundation

By Amy 2 months ago

This December, we're supporting The Big Issue Foundation as our charity of the month!

For the next 31 days, you can round up your orders to the nearest £1 at the checkout, and all money raised will be donated to The Big Issue Foundation, registered charity no 1049077.

As always, we'll be matching your donations, so whatever you help to raise, we’ll donate the same, doubling the total amount given to charity.

About The Big Issue Foundation

The Big Issue Foundation exists to connect Big Issue vendors in the UK to the support and personal solutions that enable them to rebuild their lives and determine their own pathways to a better and more sustainable future.

They empower over 1,300 Big Issue vendors each year to regain their independence and turn a livelihood into a life. Your support changes lives by providing a hand-up, not a hand-out, so please donate today.

Support Big Issue vendors this Christmas

This Christmas, The Big Issue Foundation is asking vendors from across the UK to tell them their Big Wish. One of their vendors, Rodney, said his Big Wish this year is for every vendor to have a place to call home.

“I was on the streets for 16 years but before that I’d done The Big Issue in Salisbury. I’m off the drink, I’m off the drugs and I’m off the gambling.

“I love The Big Issue and if I can do something for it in the future I will. My customers are awesome, that’s all I can say about them. They know about my past and what I’ve struggled with, and they know I’m getting help. They realise I’m a human being. I work four or five days a week on my pitch and I can sell 50 magazines in that time. I volunteer in a foodbank as well.

“About a year ago I had managed to save up £1,500 of Big Issue earnings and I used it for a deposit for my flat. I’ve been there ever since. I’m finally getting my life together now.”

You can support Big Issue vendors like Rodney by making a top-up donation when you shop with us in December, and we'll will also match your donation.

Your support will help vendors access safe and secure accommodation this Christmas and prevent future homelessness through ongoing support.

Last Month’s Charity

Throughout November, we helped to support 2wish and raised more than £1,080, thanks to your checkout donations. Thank you so much to everyone who donated! We’ll also be matching your donations, bringing the total raised for the charity to just over £2,160.

2wish offer support for those affected by sudden death in young people. When a family loses a child or young adult the effects are devastating for all who knew and loved them.

Their mission is to ensure that all those affected by the sudden and traumatic death of a child or a young adult aged 25 or under throughout Wales receive the support they deserve.

More about The Big Issue Foundation

Vendors purchase The Big Issue magazine for £1.50 and sell it on for £3. Since it started in 1991, the magazine has provided a livelihood for 92,000 Big Issue vendors - reaching the milestone of 200 million copies sold in 2016. In fact, if these copies were stacked up, they’d reach the International Space Station!

The Big Issue Foundation provides additional support to over 1,300 vendors every year. This support empowers vendors to move forward, regain their independence and turn a livelihood into a life.

Frontline workers are trained to accurately identify the needs of a Big Issue vendor and provide expert information, advice, and guidance best suited to address these needs. They do this by accessing local services, maintaining support networks, and preventing Big Issue vendors falling through the gaps in society.

Autumn Inspiration

By Amy 2 months ago

Autumn is a beautiful transitional season, a season of change. The year is leaving the warm days of summer behind and leading up to the colder days of winter, which are now just around the corner. The world outside is preparing, the trees are drawing all the energy they can from their leaves, turning them beautiful hues of deep reds through to golden yellows and leaving them brittle. One hint of a breeze blows them like confetti through the golden dappled sunshine. The blackbirds and robins are making the most of the glut of berries and gorging themselves on all the delicious treats the hedgerows have to offer. The squirrels and jays are gathering as many fallen chestnuts and acorns as they can, burying them and storing them for when they’re needed most.

You can’t help but feel this natural instinct to gather and prepare. It’s a comforting feeling. It’s a time of cosiness. Hot drinks, hot water bottles, roaring open fires, snuggly blankets and making things.

With the idea of cosiness and autumn in mind, we’ve found some lovely patterns you can enjoy during this beautiful season.

These lovely chunky and cosy cardigans are knitted in King Cole Autumn Chunky and will keep you warm on those chillier autumn days. Choose from the beautiful selection of shades in the Autumn Chunky range.

If you’re wanting something easy to add a layer to your autumn outfit, these knitted shawls are perfect and have the added bonus of knitting up quickly in the soft Autumn Chunky yarn.

Also knitted in the pretty King Cole Autumn yarn, this handy accessory set includes arm warmers, a hat, headband and scarf. These make for lovely short projects you can pick up when you have a spare few moments. They’d also make great gifts!

The beautiful Fallen Leaves Shawl is autumn in a shawl! From the gorgeous golden yellow colour to the pretty lace design. We’ve chosen the Stylecraft Bellissima yarn to use with this pattern, which is wonderfully soft and has a merino-like twist that creates lovely stitch definition.

Make every day an autumnal day, with the beautiful and warm autumnal shades of the King Cole Bramble range. Knitting up as a standard DK yarn it can be used with lots of DK patterns, so the choice is almost endless when it comes to projects to make.

Who could resist this sweet hedgehog crochet cardigan, with matching blanket. Crocheted in Sirdar Snuggly DK, it’s lovely and soft and can be washed easily in the washing machine - perfect for children’s garments! The little hedgehogs are crocheted separately so you can add as many as you like, or you could even add them to other makes to make matching items!

This super cute sweater and trousers pattern also uses the Sirdar Snuggly DK yarn. There are so many beautiful shades to choose from in this range, so you can choose your favourite. The whimsical embroidered mushrooms and flowers are reminiscent of a pretty woodland scene and adds something extra special.

We love the fluffy detail of the squirrel’s tail in this sweet sweater pattern! Something little ones would love too. The sweater is knitted in Sirdar Snuggly DK and the tail is knitted in Sirdar Snuggly Bunny. The Snuggly Bunny range is an irresistibly soft, fur-like baby yarn and has the softest and fluffiest texture! It’s a great yarn for adding sweet little details to makes. Let your imagination run wild and use it to add a bit of extra detail to other patterns!

The Emu Classic DK range is available in 50 different shades, but our Autumn bundle is a collection of all those beautiful shades inspired by this lovely season. You could use this bundle to make so many different projects including blankets, coordinating accessories such as hats and scarfs, baby garments, seasonal decorations like pompom garlands, bunting, and so much more! The yarn knits to a standard DK tension, so there are lots of patterns to choose from!

On the theme of seasonal decorations, we love these crocheted autumn leaves and mushrooms. Use them to decorate a mantle piece for an autumn inspired display, or add loops of yarn and hang them up if you have a seasonal tree. If you don’t yet have one, these are a great reason to make one! All you need is a vase or large glass jar and a selection of twigs and sticks. Arrange the sticks and twigs in your jar or vase and you’re ready to decorate with your favourite seasonal decorations! Change through the seasons and different celebrations throughout the year for a bit of fun!

We hope you all enjoy this wonderful season and make time to do the things you love the most. For more autumn inspiration why not take a look at our beautiful autumn collection here >>

Read Jane’s Story

On the 23rd of July 2020 our world fell apart and the sky caved in. That sounds awfully dramatic but it is exactly what happened. In those days, weeks, months and now years, simply putting one foot in front of the other became the biggest challenge of everyday. Within the shortest time we were speaking to Becky from 2 Wish Upon a Star, who was there to help us navigate those dark days. They provided trauma counselling for the whole family and anyone who was affected by Llyr's death including his friends. Each young death affects up to 105 people and they are there to support any of those who need help. What a massive undertaking. Please support them.

2wish Memory Boxes

Containing two elephants, one stays with the lost loved one, and one stays with the family. Elephants are an important part of our charity ethos, and will always continue to be so, as elephants never forget, and neither do 2wish. This box is given to families following on from the unimaginable, preserving precious memories forever more.
