Projects to Celebrate the Queen's Official Birthday
By Vanessa 4 years ago

Saturday 13th June marks the official Queen’s birthday. The official birthday is marked on the second Saturday in June every year. The Queen’s actual birthday is the 21st of April and her majesty usually spends her day privately, with family. The occasion is normally marked publicly by gun salutes in central London, a 41 gun salute in Hyde Park, a 21 gun salute in Windsor Great Park and a 62 gun salute at the Tower of London!

Every year on her official birthday, Her Majesty is joined by other members of the Royal Family at the spectacular Trooping the Colour parade, which moves between Buckingham Palace, The Mall and Horseguards’ Parade. However, this year the public parade has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus. Instead, there will be a ceremony marking the Queen’s official birthday held at Windsor, with coverage on the BBC.

The Queen has ruled for longer than any other Monarch in British history, overtaking Queen Victoria’s record and this year her Majesty marked her 94th birthday.

Some interesting facts:

The Queen has links - as Royal Patron or President - with over 600 charities, military associations, professional bodies and public service organisations.

Her extraordinary reign has seen her travel more widely than any other monarch, undertaking many historic overseas visits.

A lesser known interest of the Queen is Scottish country dancing. Each year during her stay at Balmoral Castle, The Queen gives dances known as Gillies' Balls, for neighbours, estate and Castle staff and members of the local community.

We’ve taken a look through our brilliant pattern collection for our favourite patterns that celebrate all things Royal. Even though there will be no public parade this year, there’s still plenty of reasons to celebrate at home by knitting or crocheting these royal patterns.
