Knitted clothes: 5 reasons you should knit your own
By Beth Shearing 8 years ago

Love knitted clothes? We urge you to start knitting your own garments instead of buying them from a store.

The Knitting Network’s Freddie Patmore is an advocate of doing this. She prefers getting creative at home to spending hours searching through rails in crowded high street stores.

‘It saves wasting loads of time scouring the shops for a knit I have in mind. I can have any jumper I want when I go ahead and knit one myself in my chosen shade and fibre,’ Freddie explains.

'My arms are longer than average so knitting for myself means I can customise my garment to fit me perfectly.’

Because we couldn’t agree with Freddie more, here are 5 other reasons you should craft your own knitted clothes.

1. You’ll never, ever, ever be bored. Fact.

In winter, knitting possibilities are quite literally endless with jumpers, socks, scarves, hats and other accessories to get started on.

And you can keep your knitting needles busy during the warmer months too making yourself lightweight tops, skirts and chic wraps to wear with summer dresses.

2. Ever been in one of the following awkward situations?

  • You’ve arrived at work to find your colleague in the exact same cable knit sweater
  • You’ve found yourself stood next to someone wearing a matching checked dress on the Tube
  • The lady before you in the supermarket queue is rocking an identical tote

If you answered yes to any of the statements, you’ll be pleased to know that you’ll never experience this kind of fashion faux-pas again if you knit your own clothes. Your outfits will always be unique.

3. You’ll quickly learn that there are few things in life more satisfying than being able to casually say, ‘This old thing? Oh, I knitted it myself’, when a stranger stops you in the street to ask where your stylish yellow jumper is from.

4. The yarns for hand-knitting are usually much richer in content than those used in shop knits, which means they’re often far warmer with higher percentages of natural wool fibre.

5. You’ll soon learn that there’s a great deal of pride that comes from knitting something from scratch. Mastering different stitches can be challenging so you have every right to feel happy once you complete a garment.
