Our granny square crochet along in Stylecraft yarn - the Flower Garden CAL

Join our granny square crochet along in an exclusive Stylecraft colour palette chosen by Heather at The Patchwork Heart. Original design by Lynne Rowe.

Heather is a crochet lover and self-confessed colour addict. We at The Knitting Network love her sumptuous 'colour recipes' so we were delighted when she agreed to cook one up especially for us. She's named our granny square crochet along The Flower Garden CAL.

Tell us how the name came about, Heather.

'I have called this recipe Flower Garden. It is inspired by a warm summer's day walking around a National Trust garden admiring all the hot colours in a herbaceous border or rose garden.'

For this CAL you will need Stylecraft Special Aran (100% acrylic).

For the complete blanket: 4 x 100g (196m) balls of Stylecraft Special Aran (100% acrylic) in Cream (1005); 1 ball in each of Pomegranate (1083), Lipstick (1246), Fondant (1241), Spice (1711) Magenta (1084), Plum (1061), Lemon (1020) and Meadow (1065). This CAL is crocheted on a 5mm hook.

Well we’re sufficiently excited! Where did your love of crochet come from?

'I have a real love of cottage gardens with the vast amounts of different flowers and colours, all jumbled up together in one bed.

'I also love to decorate my home in a country cottage style. I collect lots of lovely clutter and interesting vintage-inspired things.

'Crochet appeals to me greatly because of its mathematical nature of combining patterns and colours. When I see a beautiful garden, piece of china or country view, my brain just translates it into yarn and a blanket. I guess you can say I am crochet obsessed!'

Well you certainly aren’t alone in that, Heather! It appears that you can draw inspiration from many places. Tell us what you thought about this particular granny square crochet along pattern by the marvellous Lynne Rowe?

'This project is such fun as it has different sets of squares to make. The flowers in the centre of the blanket look complex but in fact are very easy to complete using the clearly written instructions. I like to work in a production line manner when I am making a blanket, so this suited me perfectly.

'Laying the completed squares out to be joined was a real joy, following the instructions and achieving a geometric pattern rather like a formal garden.'

The pattern will be released in four stages over four weeks. The finished blanket will measure approx 104 x 104 cm including edging.
