The first instalment of our latest crochet along 'Grandmother's Footsteps' is here. This traditional granny square blanket is made up of simple granny squares in cream and bright colours. It is suitable for those with a bit more crochet experience.

We are so excited to bring you part one of our free crochet along blanket pattern.

This part shows you how to make square A. You will need 8 of these squares. They are made from cream, lilac and bright purple.

With 4mm hook and Lilac, make 4ch and join with a slst to form a ring.

First round: Work 3ch.

Then work 2 trebles (tr) into ring.

To work tr, take yarn over hook.

Insert hook into ring. Take yarn over hook again.

Pull through ring. Take yarn over hook again.

Pull through two loops on hook.

Take yarn over hook again and pull through remaining two loops on hook.

Repeat again once more.

Then work 3ch.

Then 3tr in ring.

Repeat referring to the pattern and slst in 3rd of 3ch.

Second round: Work slip stitch (sl st) along to the 3 chain space (ch sp).

Work 3ch, 2tr, 3ch and then 3tr into 3 ch corner space.

Work 1ch and then 3tr, 3ch and 3tr into next corner space.

Repeat round referring to the pattern.

Third round: Join in next colour, Aran to any corner space.

Work 3ch, 2tr, 3ch and 3tr into same corner space.

Work 1ch and 3tr, 1ch into next 3 ch space.

Repeat the round referring to the pattern.

Fourth round: Join in Bright Purple to any corner space. 

Work 3ch, 2tr, 3ch, and 3tr into same chain space.

Repeat the round referring to the pattern. 

Fifth round: Join Aran to any corner chain space. Work round referring to the pattern.

Sixth - ninth rounds: Work referring to the pattern.

Join with a sl st to cast off and weave in ends.

Joining the squares

When working the sixth round, you will sometimes work the joining round instead. 

To work the joining round, sl st along and into the corner, then 3ch.

Work 2tr, 3ch and 3tr into the same ch sp.

Work 1ch, 3tr in next ch sp. Repeat this to the corner.

Work 3tr in ch sp corner and then 1ch.

Place wrong sides of two squares together.

With working square at front, sl st into corner space of back square.

Work 1ch, 3tr in same corner ch sp on square at front.

Sl st in next ch sp on square at back, 3tr in next ch sp on square at front.

Repeat this to the next corner ch sp.

Work 1ch, 3tr in corner ch sp on square at front.

Work 1ch and then sl st in corner ch sp.

Repeat referring to the pattern if joining square on two sides.

Complete the square at front as 6th round of square A. 

That's it for part one. Crochet a further seven squares in the same way. Making eight in total.
