Charity of the Month - Porchlight
By Vanessa 4 years ago

We’re delighted to be supporting Porchlight as our charity of the month throughout October! During the month, you can round up your orders to the nearest £ at the checkout and all money raised will be donated to Porchlight, a registered charity no. 267116.

We’ll also be matching donations so whatever you donate, we’ll donate the same amount, therefore doubling the total amount raised for the charity.

Porchlight is a local charity to us here at The Knitting Network and are Kent’s largest charity for homeless and vulnerable people. They’re here for people who have nowhere to go and no-one to turn to. Some are living on the streets; others need support to prevent or resolve any issues that could put them at risk of homelessness.

Porchlight strive for a fairer society where vulnerable people find stability, the most excluded are included, and where homelessness and poverty are things of the past.

Homelessness during the pandemic:

Porchlight has been supporting people who are homeless and at risk of becoming so throughout lockdown. When lockdown began, Porchlight's street outreach team helped 130 rough sleepers into emergency accommodation. The team continued working around the clock to ensure everyone in emergency accommodation had the support they needed. This included help accessing food banks, shopping for essentials, addressing the trauma caused by homelessness, and finding more permanent accommodation.

Porchlight's helpline was a lifeline for the many households who were worried about work or money, unable pay their rent, or struggling to put food on the table access food.

Porchlight was also there for vulnerable people alone in their homes who felt unable to cope emotionally. It supported them throughout lockdown, replacing normal face-to-face services with regular phone and video calls. Porchlight's teams were in regular contact, listening to people’s concerns and helping them to address the issues they were facing.

It also made sure people recovering from homelessness in Porchlight properties weren’t left behind. Because it’s easy to feel cut off from others if you have been homeless, it moved community hubs - places they can socialise, learn practical life skills and feel more connected to others - online so they could continue participating.

As the emotional and economic impact of the coronavirus deepens, Porchlight is expecting the demand for its frontline services to increase. It is planning for this and putting the resources in place to take action quickly and effectively so that it can help communities to respond and recover from this crisis.

Autumn is an important time for Hedgehogs as they get ready for hibernation. This means surviving for many months without food or water while living off their own fat reserves that they build up in Autumn. As the season progresses, many people ask how they can help hedgehogs to build up their reserves ready for the winter months. Not only this, but hedgehogs also need a home to settle down into for the winter. Read more here.
