Afternoon Tea Blanket KAL Part 3

By Amy Sosbe 5 years ago

Welcome to the third instalment of our wonderful Afternoon Tea Blanket Knit Along (KAL). We’ve been blown away by the sheer loveliness of all your blanket WIPs! Your blankets are coming along beautifully, and we hope you’ve been enjoying the KAL so far! You can see some of your fellow knitter’s work from the last week here:

Our third instalment of our KAL is for the oh-so-vintage Window-pane Check Motif, reminding us of lovely old-fashioned tea towels. Knitted in soft vintage blue and cream shades, this clever motif uses a combination of knitting and crochet to create the check design.

This week you will need 2x Cream (1005) and 1x Cornish Blue (1841), as well as 1 pair of 3.75mm (No. 9) knitting needles, a size 3.00 crochet hook and a knitter’s needle for sewing up.

To create the check pattern, you knit 2 horizontal stripes of blue by simply changing to the blue shade when the pattern asks. Just like the Polka-dot Motif, you will be cutting the blue at the end of each row, leaving a length of blue at the beginning and end of the row.

The vertical stripes are created in a clever way. Following the pattern, once you’ve finished knitting, you will have made two vertical inverted ribs. This is where the crochet hook comes in! Using your hook and the blue shade, and following the patterns instructions, you then crochet a chain row starting from the bottom and working up, using the inverted rib as a guide.

If you are new to crochet, we've made a simple helpful video to show you how to do the crochet chain, which you can view over on our Facebook group.

Here's a photograph that shows the back of the work:

And this is the finished result!

Please remember not to block your work until the KAL has finished. We will go through the blocking instructions in the final part.

If you’re new to the KAL you can get the handy colour pack for the Afternoon Tea Blanket for only £15.99. You can also read our previous blog posts and download each part of the pattern by following the links below:
